2021 Hall of Fame Inductees - Tim "Smith" Grivna & Joel, The Big J, Van Dover

Joel Van Over Family 400.

Tim "Smith" Grivna began his radio and sports broadcasting career in Mitchell in 1973.  During his career in Mitchell, he covered Mitchell High School, Dakota Wesleyan, and other area sports until his retirement on April 30, 2021.  He called play-by-play of over 800 football games, over 5,000 basketball games, and hundreds of high school/legion and amateur baseball games.

Tim served as the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo Parade Marshal in 2019.  The Family Fun Day that we enjoy during rodeo week was his idea.  Tim has served on several community boards and organizations and volunteered countless hours for many athletic and community events, among them the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo.

Tim and his wife, Sandi raised 5 children and they now enjoy spoiling their 9 grandchildren.  Congratulations Tim!

Joel, The Big J, Van Dover was born and raised in Aberdeen, SD.  After high school graduation he attended USD with a degree in Mass Communications.  He then came to Mitchell for a job interview with Tim Smith for a position with KMIT radio, and the rest is history!  He truly enjoyed hearing from his listeners, and always enjoyed joking around.  From grade school on, he was always playing jokes and pranks on everyone.

Mitchell was his home and he always believed in giving back to his community.  Through his work at KMIT he was able to use his platform to help promote not only our community, but also events like the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo.  He loved his family and they in return loved him.  He was so proud of his children, Amy and Hank and grandchildren Emma and Patrick.  When not on the radio his favorite thing to do was fishing and pontooning at his parent's lake cabin at Richmond Lake in Aberdeen, SD.

Congratulations Joel!
