Judging Guidelines

Information:

Check-In:  At the arena with the Queen Coordinator.  After check-in, Senior Contestants should not have any further contact with their parents.  Parents should be seated in the grandstands and audience to observe.  juniors and Princesses may have contact with their parents for clothing changes and travel to events, but parents should otherwise be in the grandstands or the audience.

Photogenic Photoshoot:  After checking-in, you will go to a private photoshoot.  You must pose yourself to your best advantage.  The photographer will not help you.  You will have a standing photo, a sitting photo, and an action/fun photo.  Two of each of these photos will be printed by photographer for judging.

Horsemanship:  You may begin warming up your horse at 7:00 a.m. in the arena.  Check-in and photogenic will begin at 8:00 a.m.  Horsemanship will begin at 8:30 a.m.  You will bring your own horse for the first pattern.  A set pattern will be emailed to you.  For Senior Contestants, your second pattern will be completed on a provided horse rather than your own.  This pattern will not be revealed until this round.  Because many of our queens are asked to ride stock contractor or other borrowed horses during their reign, it is important that the judges are able to see you ride a horse other than your own.  Senior and junior Contestants may also be asked to dismount and mount your horse, carry a flag, and/or do additional pattern work at the discretion of the judges.  You may use western tack of your choice, but it will be checked by the judges.  They prefer to follow AQHA reining guidelines.  You must use split reins.  No riding two-handed.  Spurs are optional.  As horsemanship skills are a big part of rodeo and the equine industry, in-depth horsemanship questions will be asked following both patterns.

Welcome & Introductions:  Be prepared to Briefly introduce yourself and your guest in attendance (Example:  "Hello, my name is Jane Doe.  I am an 18-year-old senior contestant from Deadwood, SD.  With me today are my parents, Johan and Jean.")  Each age group will then model their Fashion Forward outfit individually while their short bio is read.  You will then answer 2 questions out of a draw.  At the conclusion of your group, you will model through the crowd and line up for photos.  Your group will then be excused to go change into your Western Glamour Outfit.

Modeling & Impromptu Speech:  You will model individually while your dress description is being read.  You will then give your impromptu speech on a topic which was given to you prior to modeling.  You will not have a time limit but judges will score accordingly for a short talk less than one minute.  Typically, your speech should be 1.5-2.5 minutes.  At the conclusion of your group, you will model through the crowd and line up for photos.  Your group will then be excused to go change into your Interview Outfit.

Personal Interview:  Personal interviews will be conducted individually in private with the judges.  12 minutes for senior contestants, 8 minutes for junior contestants.  These times are subject to change at judges' discretion.

Public Media Interview:  Each contestant will go in Front of the judges and audience individually; the other contestants will be secluded in a room off stage.  you will be asked 3-4 questions by the Judges.  Then, you will be seated, and the next contestant will come out and answer the same questions.  you should be well-versed on the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo, general rodeo knowledge, and general SD knowledge.  At the conclusion of all age group contestant interviews, you will all model through the crowd and line up for photos as a group.

Written Test:  All Jr. Queen & Sr. Queen Contestants will be taking a written test.  The question on the test are factual questions that might include horse care, knowledge of tack, disease anatomy, knowledge of professional rodeo, rodeo terminology, & world standings.

Coronation:  Be horseback on your own horse at the arena on Thursday, July 15th, at approximately 6:00 p.m.
