Official Rules & Regulations

Contestant Eligibility:

*        A contestant must be a citizen of the United States of America & a legal resident of the state of South Dakota.

*        A contestant must not be a parent and/or pregnant, married, engaged, or divorced.

*        A Jr. Princess contestant shall not have reached the age of 10 by the beginning date of the pageant (July 18th, 2019).

*        A Princess contestant must be at least 10 years of age by the beginning date of the pageant (July 18th, 2019) and shall not have reached the age of 14 by July 1st, 2020.

*        A Jr. Queen contestant must be at least 14 years of age by July 1st, 2020 and shall not have reached the age of 18 by July 1st, 2020.

*        A Sr. Queen contestant must be at least 18 years of age by July 1st, 2020 and shall not have reached the age of 24 by January 1st, 2020.

Entry Procedure:

*        Each contestant must complete an official Corn Palace Stampede Queen Contest application.

*        Each contestant must sign the Waiver of Liability. If the contestant is less than 18 years of age, a parent or guardian must sign the Waiver as well.

*        The registration fee is $30.00 per contestant, which will include (some) meals & beverages throughout the Queen Contest.

*        Your entry fee also includes an official Corn Palace Stampede Queen Contest shirt. Please indicate the shirt size as well – (Child’s M or L) or (Adult S, M, L, or XL)

*        The entry deadline is July 1st, 2019. There will be an additional charge of $15.00 if your entry is late.

Determination of Winners:

*        The contestant with the highest overall combined total score in each age division will be crowned Jr. Princess, Princess, Jr. Queen, & Queen, respectively.

*        The contestant with second highest overall combined total score in each age division will be crowned First Runner Up.

Judging Guidelines


*        There will be three qualified judges for all age divisions, that will judge all categories.

Judged Events:

*        Horsemanship - Each contestant will compete in horsemanship, which will be rail work. Sr. Queen Contestants will run a second pattern.

*        Introduction Speeches - Each contestant will be giving a brief introduction speech about themselves. Contestants should include their name, age, parent’s name, where they are from & some fun facts about themselves.

*        Impromptu Questions – Each contestant will be answering an impromptu question. Jr. Princess & Princess Contestants will be answering one impromptu question. Jr. Queen Contestants will be answering two impromptu questions & Sr. Queen Contestants will be answering three impromptu questions.

*        Speech – Jr. Queen Contestants will be giving a two minute speech, on your favorite quote and how it relates to rodeo. Sr. Queen Contestants will be giving an extemporaneous speech. Sr. Queen Contestants will be given five different topics to choose from & ten minutes to prepare their speech. It should be between one and half minutes to two and half minutes.

*        Modeling – Each contestant will model one western outfit of their choice. Please bring a description of your outfit on a 3x5 notecard prior to judging.

*        Photogenic – This is for Sr. Queen Contestants only and is optional. If a Sr. Queen Contestant should choose to do this, please send a vertical head and shoulder shot. Please send two.

*        Personal Interview – Interviews will be held privately.

*        Written Test – All Jr. Queen & Sr. Queen Contestants will be taking a written test. The questions on the test are factual questions that are taken out of the interview & they may include horse care, knowledge of tack, disease, anatomy, knowledge of professional rodeo, rodeo terminology, & world standings.

*        Participation – Each Contestant will be judged on her participation level throughout the entire Queen Contest.

Miscellaneous Information

Contestant Expenses:

*        Required to make your own lodging arrangements.

*        Required to pay your own transportation to & from the pageant.

General Information

*        Judging will take precedence over all pageant activities. Judging will begin at the contestant’s first activity & will continue throughout the pageant.

*        No drinking of alcoholic beverages or use of tobacco products in public or anytime during the competition. If caught using either alcohol or tobacco products, you will automatically be disqualified from the Queen Contest.

*        Complete cooperation must be given to all contestants, parents, Queen Coordinator and/or Queen Committee.

*        Please do not make personal phone calls or texts during the Queen Contest (the actual judging portion).

*        Each contestant is required to attend all activities outlined in the schedule & to be on time for all events. There will be a 5-point deduction off the total each time that you are late.

*        All contestants will receive a pass to the rodeo & one ticket for a parent to Thursday night’s performance.

*        All contestants are encouraged to send “Thank You” notes to the sponsors from whom they receive any meals or gifts. If a contestant receives roses, a trophy, belt buckle, crown, banner, or any other gift, “Thank You” notes should be sent to these people. These sponsors are very important to this contest & need to be shown that all the contestants appreciate their support.

Waiver of Liability

In consideration of my application being accepted (and me or my helpers being permitted to engage in the above event shall be deemed to be an acceptance thereof), I hereby for myself, my executors, administrators & assigns & my helpers agree to abide by all rules & regulations pertaining to the event. I and they assume all liability and responsibility for any loss, accident or injury whether as management, in any performance or parade or while in, on or about the premises. I further agree to indemnify your committee and management from and against any loss or damage sustained by you by reason of any claims made by any of my helpers or their executors, administrator or assigns. Also, I hereby release the right, title, and claim of any photographs that may be given to or taken by the management for their further use. I certify that I know rodeo is a risky sport and I can be injured while taking part and that I know the rules of the Corn Palace Stampede Queen Contest and agree to abide by them.
